Agency
Focus: Plan, coordinate, facilitate and develop county-wide
youth services to ensure that consideration is given to the needs of all the
county's young people in a comprehensive manner.
Program:
Carefully study and seek to improve, in a cost effective manner, the following
youth need areas: Leisure Activities, Crime & Justice, Alcohol &
Substance Abuse, Employment & Training, Developmental Disabilities,
Runaway & Homeless Issues, Family Issues, Health, Education, Mental
Health, and Basic Needs. This is accomplished through many avenues:
Planning and Coordination: Extensive
on-going needs assessment is developed from data collected via statistics,
local meetings, interviews, etc. Results are incorporated into the plan
which includes how the county will address those needs. The Washington
County Youth Coalition and the Youth and Justice Task Force are two of the
major planning groups working on youth issues.
Services: Receive state and
federal funds to begin meeting needs identified in the Plan--ie:
In-House Mentoring Program (Early Prevention), Parenting Education &
Community Development, and Funding which is allocated to Programs--funding is
provided to approximately 40 organizations and municipalities to enable them
to provide necessary services to county youth and families.
Training: Work closely with other
organizations, schools, and county departments to develop training as needed (ie:
Mentoring, Sharing Decisions for Youth at Risk, Recreation and Youth at Risk,
Grant Writing, etc.)
Advocacy: Advocate for youths
with the executive, administrative, and legislative bodies and the community
at large regarding the development of services and strategies which address
locally identified youth problems and needs.
The Youth Bureau has available a 72 page Resource Directory which includes
resources available to the county youth and their families, as well as a
lending library with a variety of books and other resource.
