Board of Elections - A new way to cast ballots -
Optical Scanner Voting Process
When voters in New York State go to vote this Fall they will be
voting on new Optical Scanner Voting Machines. The Help America
Vote Act (HAVA) requires that all states replace their Lever
Machines. So, Washington County’s Lever Machines will no longer be
used.
The new Optical Scanner voting process begins with a registered
voter receiving a paper ballot after signing the Poll Book. They
will select the candidate of their choice by filling in the oval
near the candidate’s name with a black marker. Then the voter
inserts the ballot into the Optical Scanner Machine, this scans and
records the selections made by the voter. Having cast their vote
the voter now exits the Poll Site.
The Board of Elections encourages voters who come to the Washington
County Fair (August 23-29, 2010) to stop by the County Building
(located across the street from the fair office) and try out the new
machine. Voters will actually cast a vote in a “Mock Election” on
the Optical Scanner Voting Machine. Also, a machine will be set up
at the Board of Election’s office at 383 Broadway, Fort Edward for
practice voting. The office is open Monday through Friday 8:30 –
4:30.

Welcome
to Washington County, New York. One of
62 counties in the State of New York, Washington County was founded
as Charlotte County in 1772 and later named after our first
president in 1784. With 30 departments ranging from the
approximately 200 employees of Pleasant Valley and 140 employees of
the Department of Social Services to the one member of the
Department of Weights and Measures, Washington County is charged
with providing necessary and incidental services to its 62,000
citizens.
Washington County is governed by a Board of Supervisors (B.O.S.)
which is comprised of the town supervisors from each of the County's
17 towns. Votes are calculated on a weighted basis reflecting the
population base of each town. The Board of Supervisors is the chief
legislative and executive body of the County and makes the laws and
resolutions which govern the County's operations. |
